FREE TO STAY
©1990 words and music by Ellen Stapenhorst

Angry words, too long left unspoken
Are building a wall, it’s going to have to be broken
‘Cause it’s getting so high that it’s blocking the light
And I can’t even find my way over
To get to you on the other side

And I’m feeling trapped, by the things that might happen
If I speak my mind…you might get hurt or you might start laughing
And I’m letting you see all the pain that’s in me
And it’s making me think about leaving
That’s a high price to pay

The more I know that I am free to go
The more I know I’m free to stay

It’s a mystery, known only to the stars above
Why the more that I’m free, the more I’m bound by love
‘Cause you’re leaving me whole and you’re leaving me strong
And you’re leaving me to think things over
And you’re leaving me your number so I can call

The more I know that I am free to go
The more I know I’m free to stay
It wasn’t you who tied me up inside
Wasn’t you got in my way
Unlock my heart, I’m free today

‘Cause you’re leaving me whole and you’re leaving me strong
And you’re leaving me to think things over
And you’re leaving me your number so I can call

The more I know that I am free to go
The more I know I’m free to stay
It wasn’t you who tied me up inside
Wasn’t you got in my way
Unlock my heart, I’m free today
I’m free to stay

MAYBE MEXICO
©1993 words and music by Ellen Stapenhorst

Working on forgiveness, that’s a foreign word to you
Nobody ever felt pain like yours
No one has a clue about what you’re going through
But I can’t keep your secrets, and I sure can’t stop your pain
Maybe I’ll go to Mexico, maybe that’s where I’ll stay

When I don’t see things your way, then I’m the one who’s wrong
You say I’m always running away
Well, leaving is one thing I do when I’m strong
When I get too close to you my life starts slipping away
Maybe I’ll go to Mexico, maybe that’s where I’ll stay

In Mexico I’ll find out what it feels like to be whole
I’m not expecting an easy ride
But at least I’ll have my heart and my soul

For I could die a thousand times and it wouldn’t help you live
Your need is a bottomless pit
And there’s nothing left of me that I want to give
So I’m going to leave before I’m gone
I’m heading out today
Maybe I’ll go to Mexico, maybe that’s where I’ll stay
Maybe I’ll go to Mexico, maybe that’s where I’ll stay

THE GIFT
©1989 words and music by Ellen Stapenhorst

I wanted to live on the mountaintop, undisturbed by the problems of men
I’d spend all my time listening to God and talking to the wind
But I keep getting drawn back into this world
And I have to find peace on the run
Reluctant to play, I’m caught up in the game
For my day in the sun

In the spirit of life, in this moment
We are given the chance to be free
And because there is so much to learn and to be
We are given the gift of each other

I knew a singer whose songs were pure
About humans, our loves and our greeds
And this man when he sang even angry words
Had a soul that was deeply at peace
And I knew that he’d wrestled with demons by day
Found strength in the soft breath of night
He worked to be truthful but never to lose sight of love in the fight

In the spirit of life, in this moment
We are given the chance to be free
And because there is so much to learn and to be
We are given the gift of each other

I stand between the earth and sky, grateful for all that I see
My mother’s love, my father’s life shall find their voices through me
For the spirit that gives us the freedom to move
Is the same one that gives us our place
For all we’re the same it’s our differences
That may be our saving grace

In the spirit of life, in this moment
We are given the chance to be free
And because there is so much to learn and to be
We are given the gift of each other

REST IN YOU
©1993 words and music by Ellen Stapenhorst

Oh, babe, I’ve been running like the wolves are after me
Afraid to stop and really find out what is there
Running from the lonelies, running from the scared
Running to or from anyone who seemed to care
But right now I’ll stop my running
And rest for a moment in you

I’ve been searching for a place where I’d finally feel okay
And I could find peace of mind before I’m dead
Running to the bottle, running back to bed
Running to the rhythm of the things I wished I’d said
But right now I’ll stop my running
And rest for a moment in you

Well, there are good days, then days I can’t get out the door
But mostly it’s something in between
I keep thinking I should try for something more
But I don’t know what that means

Oh, babe, life gets so crazy, so busy and so strange
That I forget just what is real and what’s a game
Running after pleasure, running after fame
Trying to get away from all the things that cause me pain
But right now I’ll stop my running
And rest for a moment in you
Yeah, right now I’ll stop my running
And rest for a moment in you

MARGARET AND ELIZABETH
©1988 words and music by Ellen Stapenhorst

Margaret and Elizabeth grew up side by side
They were in each other’s weddings, they were there when someone died
Now Liz is in a wheelchair ever since she had a stroke
And though Maggie’s eyes are failing, she still can see a joke

Remember, Liz, when we were kids and always playing games?
You’d close your eyes and I would lead you running through the town
Now you’ll be my eyes, and I’ll be your legs
And we’ll play that game together one more round

Margaret and Elizabeth are known throughout the town
They always have a story for the kids who hang around
About the Great Depression or the hard times in the war
They weave such visions with their words, the kids come back for more

Remember when my Joseph died?  I thought that I would, too
But Maggie, with her kids to feed, found a way to pull me through
I brought them bread and they brought me life
And we faced the world together one more time

Some say the world has changed too much to care for one another
But Liz and Maggie’s joy has spread much farther than each other

For Margaret and Elizabeth know what it is to need
What it means to work together, so together you succeed
And the neighbors are inspired by this pair who work as one
How can they have such troubles, and still have so much fun?

I used to do a hundred things…now it’s ninety-nine
But with Liz to see the way for me, I get along just fine
She is my eyes and I am her legs
And we play that game together one more round
She brings me bread and she brings me life
And we face the world together one more time

TAKING OUR LIVES IN OUR HANDS
©1993 words and music by Ellen Stapenhorst

Rise up, it’s a new day
Good morning, sister
Good morning, brother
There’s so much to do
And the first thing is to listen
To be quiet and to speak the truth

Chorus:

We’re taking our lives in our hands
I am in yours, you are in mine
And we’re taking our lives in our hands
The future will grow from the seeds that we sow today

Stand up, it’s our moment
We are the bridge now, reaching tomorrow
That touches yesterday
And a question we must ask now:
Is this as true for my grandchildren’s children as it is today?

Chorus

Life…so incredibly strong yet incredibly fragile
Sings through our hearts and the touch of our hands
In the cries of the children and the eyes of the old ones
In the ancient dark forests and the flight of a hawk
In the grace of the earth and the gift of our minds
It’s the thread that weaves and dances and invisibly binds

Chorus

PART OF MY HEART
©1993 words and music by Ellen Stapenhorst

Chorus:
You are a part of my heart
You are precious to me
Just knowing you’re here in the world makes me happy
For you are a part of my heart

The first time we met was in winter…it seems it was lifetimes ago
And we kept out the cold with the stories we told
Together we learned to be whole

I know I am many things to you
A lover, a sister, a friend
And you are to me like the earth and the sea
And the sky that goes on without end

Chorus:
You are a part of my heart
You are precious to me
Just knowing you’re here in the world makes me happy
For you are a part of my heart

One day in summer you came back
You’d been gone such a very long time
And the joy that I feel, just knowing you’re real
Will fill me forever with a smile

This time our journeys are different
Still they meet where the road starts to bend
And although we’re apart, with each beat of my heart
I remember a love without end

Chorus:
You are a part of my heart
You are precious to me
Just knowing you’re here in the world makes me happy
For you are a part of my heart
Just knowing you’re here in the world makes me happy
For you are a part of me

FEELS LIKE HOME
©1992 words and music by Ellen Stapenhorst

What an adventure this life is
I have flown to distant cities, traveled deep inside alone
And to find a partner in this journey
Is the sweetest gift my heart has known

Chorus:
And it feels like home, feels like home
Anywhere with you is home

What an adventure this love is
Sometimes easy, sometimes hard, sometimes close and sometimes far
But to be without it, life would be empty
For together in this love is where we are

Chorus:
And it feels like home, feels like home
Together in this love is home
Feels like home, feels like home
Anywhere with you is home

Bridge:
And all the things we’ve done, all the people that we know
All of these are part of coming home

What an adventure this day is
Stepping through a doorway to a life that is unknown
And my heart is pounding, the same as yours
In the meeting of our hearts we’re coming home

Chorus:
Coming home, it feels like home
In the meeting of our hearts we’re coming home
Coming home, feels like home
Anywhere with you is home

Anywhere with you is home

NOBODY EVER
©1988 words and music by Ellen Stapenhorst

Two kids, walking home from school
Only seventeen but they’re falling
Young love writes its own rules, has its own way of calling
She wore his letterman jacket and he wore the look of a happy young man
Seeing them tumbled me back through the years again

To your kiss that stole my breath away
But it was you who captured me
Through hard times, trying to make ends meet
Our loving made it seem easy
We had a few good years then some bad ones but true love never ends
Ours was true enough we parted as almost friends

Chorus:
Nobody ever took the place of you
Nobody ever took the place of you
Though my life has been full, no regrets for the most part
You still have a place in my heart
And nobody ever took the place of you

So I call to find out how you are
How’s your wife and family these days?
You say it’s hard, sometimes you want to leave
But this time you won’t walk away
Me, I’ve had a few lovers but mostly I guess I’ll keep living alone
I think it’s gotten too easy to be on my own

Chorus:
Nobody ever took the place of you
Nobody ever took the place of you
Though my life has been full, no regrets for the most part
You still have a place in my heart
And nobody ever took the place of you

HEART OF LOVE
©1989 words and music by Ellen Stapenhorst

A stowaway on a ship that sails far away from where he was born
A young man leaving home while the dolphins and whales
Call him onward, into the morn
He’s a tender child, he’s a gentle man
He has wells of kindness in his eyes and hands
And he’s following the morning star looking for the heart of love

He leaves behind all the city streets, ruthless minds feeding their greed
And he’s leaving, too, his friends, though he swears to me
He’ll come back to us when he’s found what he needs
He’s a wondering child, he’s a searching man
He has endless questions in his eyes and hands
And he’s following the morning star looking for the heart of love

From the earth and sea flows the blood of life
Mysteries needing no name
He feels the ocean spray and the breath of night
And its breathing fans a flame
He’s a magic child, he’s a warrior man
There’s a flash of lightning in his eyes and hands
And he’s following the morning star looking for the heart of love

Though I know he won’t be coming back we will not be apart
For I touch him in the air I breathe, and I feel him in my heart

Now the morning sky lights his radiant face
Golden eyes seeing so much
As he kneels to bless the day shipmates gather round
They are drawn to him, drawn to his touch
He’s a loving child, he’s an open man
He has worlds of healing in his eyes and hands
And he’s following the morning star looking for the heart of love
I have followed him like the morning star
And I’ve found the heart of love

FIRST DAYS OF SPRING
©1992 words and music by Ellen Stapenhorst

If there were just one word I could say to you
I would look in your eyes and say yes
Yes to all your heartache, yes to all your joy
And yes, we’re all trying to do our best

If there were just one way I could touch you
I’d touch your heart the way that you touch mine
And it would open like a rose on a summer’s morn
And our laughter would flow like summer wine

In the first days of spring, when the moon is full
There’s a promise that life will carry on
And for all the times we’ve failed we’re forgiven
And the long nights of winter are gone

If there were just one gift I could give to you
I would stand as a mirror to your life
And you would see the way you’ve grown, see the way you shine
And see all the love that’s in your eyes

In the first days of spring, when the earth is full
There’s a promise that life will carry on
And for all the times we’ve failed we’re forgiven
And the long nights of winter are gone

In the first days of spring, when our hearts are full
There’s a promise that life will carry on
And for all the times we’ve failed we’re forgiven
And the long, cold nights of winter are gone
